In Peru, children and adolescents have the opportunity to apply for a program designed to enhance their skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. This call not only offers specialized training, but also a trip to NASA headquarters and the Walt Disney World amusement park in Florida, United States.

Huarmis Foundation is a Peruvian non-profit organization that works to promote STEM skills. Recently, it has announced the aforementioned call for residents of Peru who have between 11 to 16 years of age. Applications will be received until June 28.

How to apply for the Huarmis Space 2024 program?

Below, we announce the dates to take into account to apply for the program Huarmis Space 2024supported by the United States Embassy in Peru.

  • Final date for applications: Friday, June 28, 2024
  • Communication to applicants who move on to the selection interview phase: Thursday July 11
  • Participant list publication: Friday July 19
  • Date of trip to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and Walt Disney (for students who excelled): November 2024

The requirements to apply for the call

Girls, boys and adolescents who show interest in science may participate in the call if they meet the following requirements:

  • Be between 11 and 16 years old.
  • Have an authorization signed by the father, mother and/or guardians.
  • Residing in Peru.
  • Demonstrate that they are part of vulnerable populations in Peru.
  • Have availability to complete classes and activities.
  • Develop the entire application form with transparency and truthfulness.

A total of 40 students will be chosen to participate in the Huarmis Space 2024 program.

How will the program be carried out?

The program will begin with virtual classes that will begin on Thursday, August 8. The teachers are international specialists in areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The topics that will be addressed in the sessions are astronomy, programming, robotics for social impact, creativity and innovation, STEM skills, aerospace engineering. Classes will end with an ‘Integrated STEM Project’ that will allow you to test what you have learned.

Likewise, they will be carried out practical workshops where students will be able to apply new knowledge in team activities. To do this, they will have personalized STEM mentoring.

Towards the end of the program, six students, consisting of three girls and three boys or teenagers, will be selected to travel to NASA headquarters and the Walt Disney World amusement park.

What does the trip consist of?

The trip will last five days and will be carried out accompanied by the Huarmis volunteer team. The organization will facilitate interaction with professionals from the Kennedy Space Center and Walt Disney World, in addition to documenting experiences and learning.

Various activities will be carried out, including: meeting an astronaut, viewing a movie in IMAX 3D format, tour of the Rocket Garden, visit to the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), the space shuttle Atlantis, among others.

What is the main purpose of the trip to NASA Headquarters and Walt Disney World?

From the visit to Kennedy Space Centerseeks to provide an immersive experience that motivates participants to pursue STEM careers, such as aeronautical engineering and aerospace engineering.

On the other hand, the visit to Mundo de Walt Disney aims to showcase advanced technology while stimulating student creativity. Likewise, it seeks to promote interest in sound and software engineering.
