The biggest risk is that Putin could interpret it as equivalent to an attack by NATO countries, responding against countries that send weapons to Ukraine, defends Chema Gil, co-director of the International Security Observatory. “It wouldn’t be a NATO attack, they are countries that provide resources,” Gil recalls. In France, President Macron for his part defends the presence of French soldiers but only training Ukrainian soldiers, not on the front line. Chema Gil maintains that the moment Russia attacks within a NATO country, NATO would respond, “30 of the most powerful countries in the world with nuclear power.” In Russia there is an autocracy disguised as democracy where opponents are eliminated before elections, so “it would not commit the folly of starting a war against NATO.” China as a mediator will act more in the coming weeks and the war could intensify until summer. “Either there is a loss-making negotiation in Ukraine or it will be a long time.”
China, beyond its actions, does not usually get involved in wars, but it needs the conflict to stop and play a decisive mediating role. “If China wants to stop the war in Ukraine, it will elevate its role as a world power,” leaving Europe in second place. The only two powers that can stop are China and the US: China with Russia and the US with Ukraine. And for Gil it is evident that China will be the one to convince Putin that the war cannot continue, because even Xi Jinping’s government needs economic stability.
