The Socialist Party (PS) won the European elections held this Sunday in Portugal, with 32.09% of the votes and eight seats, against the center-right coalition Democratic Alliance (AD), of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, which won the 31.12% of the votes and seven MEPs.

With 99.50% of the vote count completed, the 21 seats in the European Parliament that correspond to Portugal have already been allocated.

In third position is the far-right party Chega, with 9.79% and two deputies, followed by the Liberal Initiative (IL), with 9.07% and two seats. It is the first time that both forces enter the European Parliament.

Behind them are the Left Bloc (4.25%), with one seat; and the Communist Party of Portugal (4.12%), with one MEP.

The Portuguese Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, leader of AD, has already come out to recognize the defeat of his coalition and to congratulate the socialists.

If compared to the 2019 European elections, the PS has lost one seat, while the two parties that make up AD maintain the same number of MEPs they had.

The change in Portugal comes from the advance of Chega and the Liberal Initiative, which break into the European Parliament for the first time, given the decline of the Left Bloc and the Portuguese Communist Party, which lose one seat each, and the disappearance of the animalist PAN. , which had a seat.

These results reproduce the technical tie that occurred in the legislative elections on March 10 between the socialists and AD in Portugal, which was resolved in favor of the center-right coalition led by the now prime minister Luís Montenegro by a difference of two seats.

More than 10.8 million Portuguese were called to go to the polls this Sunday to elect their 21 representatives in the European Parliament among the candidates of 17 political parties.

According to the latest data on participation, the rate has been 37.50%, higher than that of 2019, when it was 30.73%.
