At least five people were injured in an explosion this Sunday in the central square of the Mexican port of Acapulco, authorities reported, but did not specify whether it was an explosive device.

The Acapulco government said in a statement that the explosion occurred in the afternoon in the central plaza of the port, where elements of the local Public Security Secretariat were transferred.

“When the officers arrived, they realized that in one of the planters there were several injured people, helped on site by members of the National Guard,” he said.

He added that the injured were taken to several hospitals and that “their injuries are not serious.”

Although the local government did not specify the cause of the explosion, according to Mexican press reports, an explosive device was thrown on purpose in the central square.

Acapulco, with coasts on the Pacific, is part of the state of Guerrero, one of the most convulsed by the activity of drug trafficking cartels.

The city has been hit lately by violence linked to organized crime. At the end of May, five people were killed and one more injured in an armed attack on a grocery store located in a port market. A few days before, 10 bodies were found in different parts of the city.

The spiral of violence that engulfs Mexico has left more than 450,000 murders since the then president Felipe Calderón (2006-2012) launched a military offensive against the cartels at the end of 2006.
