“Goodbye Morenita, goodbye”, farewell tribute to Griselda Sánchez Miguel

Lulled by the music of revelry, chants, prayers, copal and sounds of natural beings, in the early hours of Saturday, June 8, Griselda Sánchez Miguel, la More, said goodbye to the earthly world. She is also known on her Facebook profile as Lluvia Obsidiana, la More was a soundscape artist, passionate radio broadcaster, journalist and activist on issues of human rights, media and defense of the territory.

Fernando Guadarrama, composer and decimero, said goodbye to his friend with a “Goodbye Morenita, goodbye”; and a well-versed one wrote on the fly: “An entire jungle will grow/ with your obsidian rain/ as the morning is born/ and spring returns,/ and the rain in its race/ descending through the undergrowth/ will free your imprisoned soul/ from prison.” of pain/ and with a wind of love/ will wash away your sadness.”

La More chose a sanctuary to die and begin true life, the Garden of the Tlacuaches; Activists, musicians, artists, human rights defenders and family members came to this house located in the Estrella neighborhood of the city of Oaxaca to say goodbye to More. Bread, candles, tamales, mezcal, beers, a collective celebration. Her friend Mónica Montalvo cries: “We already knew, deep down we knew that she was going to happen.”

At midnight, in the middle of the wake, a voice was heard, the voice of More, she narrates her personal story. There are three events that marked her activism and her passion for the media: the Strike at UNAM in ’99, the repression in Atenco and the social revolt of 2006 in Oaxaca. Starting point and destination of his political praxis.

More had to live through the Community Radio boom. She experienced the struggles of several radio stations up close and witnessed the mobilizations for the defense of territory and freedom of expression. She studied and documented the resistance against wind megaprojects in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, from community communication experiences.

Griselda Sánchez Miguel was buried on Sunday, June 9, in her native San Isidro Jaltepetongo., in the Oaxacan Mixtec. Rest in peace.
