English football is in mourning. Hours after learning of the death of Matija Sarkic, Millwall’s 26-year-old goalkeeper, the news of the death of a former English footballer has shaken the British Isles.. Kevin Campbell, historic former striker for Arsenal and Everton, among other teams, has died at the age of 54. Author of 53 goals (in 202 games) with the Gunners and 51 goals (in 164 games) with the Toffees, and retired after the 2006-2007 season, where he played for Cardiff City, Kevin Campbell played in occasions as ‘pundit’ on ‘Sky Sports’, at the same time that he followed the career of his son, Tyrese Campbell (24 years old), at Stoke City.
“Everyone at Everton is deeply saddened by the death of our former striker Kevin Campbell at the age of 54. Not only was he a true hero of Goodison Park and an icon of English football, but he was also an incredible person, as anyone who knew him will know.. RIP, Super Kev”, was the message published by the ‘toffees’ on social networks. Likewise, Arsenal, the team for which he played during the first seven seasons of his professional career, has also farewelled the Englishman: “We are devastated to learn that our former striker Kevin Campbell has passed away after a short illness. Kevin was adored by everyone at the club. We are all thinking of his friends and family in these difficult times. Rest in peace, Kevin.”
The former English striker has also been fired by several of his other teams, such as Nottingham Forest, or the English National Team – he was an Under-21 international with the ‘Three Lions -, as well as former teammates.
Ian Wright, with whom he shared a dressing room for several seasons at Arsenal, has published photos with Kevin Campbell. In England they report that “earlier this month it was learned that Kevin Campbell was seriously ill in hospital, and the sad news of his death was confirmed on Saturday morning”. The FA has already spoken out regarding the sad deaths of the aforementioned Matija Sarkic and the 54-year-old former England player.
