He origin of the Father’s day dates back to the beginning of twentieth century, with various theories surrounding its emergence. However, the most rooted and widespread is the story of Sonora Smart Doddan American woman who advocated for the creation of this festivity as a tribute to parents.

In it American continenthe Father’s day found its historical roots June 19, 1909 in the City of Washington, United States. It was promoted by Sonora Smart Dodd, who, inspired by the success of Mother’s Day, wanted toto honor his own father, Henry Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran. Henry took on the responsibility of raising his children after his wife died in childbirth. Dodd wanted to highlight the significant role of men in society, especially those who, like his father, played the dual role of father and mother.

In Mexico This holiday gained ground thanks to the initiative of Carmelita Tostado, from The lagoon.

Like Sonora Smart Dodd, at age 17, Carmelita began to question why existed a day dedicated to honoring mothers but there was no special date to similarly recognize fathers, whose influence is fundamental in the family. Motivated by this reflection, she decided to start a campaign.

Tostado Gamboa had a clear objective: to honor fatherhood, starting with his own father, Mr. ‘Don’ Pedro Tostado Ontiveros, who worked as a telegrapher and traveled through much of Mexico in his career, even becoming head of a telegraph office. .

Carmelita’s father was the inspiration behind her initiative, focused on highlighting the importance of fathers in the lives of their children, spouses and in the family structure. For two years, she fought tirelessly to have her proposal recognized. Finally, to the 19 years, managed to get his initiative approved, thus establishing that the third Sunday in June would be celebrated as the Father’s Day in Mexico.

Since June 15, 1946, this special date has been commemorated in Mexico.
