Liverpool, the city where the Beatles were born, has been transformed to pay tribute to another music star: Taylor Swift. On the occasion of her The Eras Tour, the University of Liverpool has organized an unprecedented event: Tay Day, a free academic conference dedicated exclusively to the American singer.

Tay Day took place on June 12, from 9am to 5pm, organized by Dr Samuel Murray and Dr Amy Skjerseth from the Institute of Popular Music at the university. The goal of the symposium was to immerse attendees in the cultural phenomenon that Taylor Swift represents, analyzing her impact, as well as her musical and lyrical style that has captured millions of fans (Swifties) around the world.

In addition to Tay Day, to celebrate the arrival of Swift with her The Eras Tour, Liverpool City Council renamed the city Taylor Town for a week, as part of Liverpool’s tribute to Taylor. The beloved by millions, Swift, performed at Anfield Stadium on June 13, 14 and 15, leaving an unforgettable show in the memory of her followers.

Taylor Swift renewed her tour, The Eras Tour, to include songs from her new album The Tortured Poets Department for their 15 dates in the United Kingdom throughout June and August.

Tay Day

The University of Liverpool presented a symposium during Tay Day that recognizes and commits to the cultural phenomenon that is Taylor Swift. It was a talk to understand how Taylor is, at the same time, Miss Americana and antiheroine, understand her style and her “wildest dreams”, know Karma and Cruel Summers and debate their “reputation.”

When presenting the project of Tay Daythe University of Liverpool stated:

“We want fans, students and scholars to tell us what ‘the Eras’ of Taylor Swift mean to them; All attendees will be able to participate in a workshop at the event to discuss and debate her back catalogue. For the rest of the day, we’ve invited students and academics to share with us their work on Taylor, including a workshop on the process of writing a Taylor Swift musical and a series of interactive talks on topics ranging from Taylor’s millipede (Nannaria swiftae, an insect named after the singer) to her vinyl records or Taylor’s place in feminism and the LGBTQ+ community. The day will culminate with a Critical Karaoke session, in which the researchers will perform rehearsals of a song on a chosen Taylor Swift song.”

Additionally, as alternative activities to Tay Day, the entire city had the opportunity to explore 11 art installations inspired by Swift’s career, scattered throughout the city of Liverpool, and Swifties also enjoyed the “Liverpool Loves Taylor” workshop at the Met Quarter, where they were able to artistically express their creativity and admiration for the singer.

Tay Day was a great opportunity for Swift’s fans to come together and celebrate her music, but also for students and academics to debate and analyze the pop star’s lyrics, offering a deeper insight into her work.

The entrance to Tay Day It was free, with a limit of two tickets per person, thus allowing equitable access to the cultural event. The day culminated as an enthusiastic day of celebration, learning and appreciation of one of the most iconic figures in contemporary music who, without a doubt, projects the influence and legacy that Taylor Swift continues to build in the music industry and beyond.
