According to recent information, there are certain motorcycles that are exempt from taxes, pesetas and Value Added Tax (VAT) in Colombia.
The Mayor’s Office of Bogotá has established that the annual payment of vehicle tax is a mandatory procedure for owners of automobiles registered throughout the national territory. However, some motorcycles have been exempt from this payment thanks to Law 488 of 1998.
What are the motorcycles that do not pay taxes in Colombia?
The determining factor for this exemption is the cylinder capacity of the motorcycle. Motorcycles with a cylinder equal to or less than 125 cubic centimeters (cc) are exempt from this tax.
In addition to this, scooters or bicycles also benefit from this exemption. These low-displacement motorcycles have lower fuel consumption, which makes them an affordable option for the lower strata of the country.
How to check the displacement of a motorcycle?
To identify the cylinder of their motorcycle, owners can consult the vehicle’s ownership card. It is important to note that these motorcycles are also exempt from paying taxes and VAT at the time of purchase.
Law 488 of 1998 grants these benefits to this type of motorcycles, recognizing their importance as a means of transportation and sustenance for the lower strata of society. In addition, the operating costs of these motorcycles are also low.
In relation to the vehicle tax for the year 2024, decree 2228 of December 22, 2023 has established the rates applicable at the national level.

- Vehicles between 0 and $54,057,000 – 1.7%
- Vehicles between $54,057,001 and $121,625,000 – 2.7%
- Vehicles between $121,625,001 and above: 3.7%
- Motorcycles more than 125 cm3: 1.7%
- Electric vehicles: 1.2%
