Russia will support Cuba in the restoration of its electrical system, improving energy generation and mitigating blackouts that seriously affect the Caribbean country.

Russia has committed to helping Cuba in the restoration of its electricity generation system, at a critical moment in which the island faces serious electricity supply problems. During a meeting between the Russian Minister of Energy, Sergei Tsiviliov, and the Cuban Deputy Prime Minister, Ricardo Cabrisas, the details of this collaboration were discussed. Tsiviliov emphasized the importance of building new energy facilities and expressed confidence that the participation and experience of Russian specialists will significantly contribute to the Cuban energy sector.

Representatives of both countries discussed the prospects for cooperation in Cuba’s fuel and energy complex, as well as in the construction of energy facilities.

Issues related to cooperation in the oil and gas sector were also addressed, particularly in the joint project of the Boca de Jaruco field, where high levels of crude oil extraction have been achieved. Tsivilov stressed that the exchange of professional experiences will promote the development of the energy dialogue between Russia and Cuba.

Currently, Cuba faces severe problems in its electrical system, with blackouts affecting up to 28% of the country. These problems are due to the lack of fuel necessary for thermoelectric plants, as well as breakdowns and maintenance of several plant units that have been in operation for more than four decades. To mitigate the lack of generation capacity, the Cuban Government has rented several floating power plants. However, these solutions are temporary, expensive and polluting.

The blackouts have had a negative impact on the Cuban economy, which has been in crisis for the last four years. In addition, they have been a catalyst for anti-government protests, including the historic demonstrations on July 11, 2021 and the recent ones on March 17 in Santiago de Cuba and other locations.

The collaboration between Russia and Cuba in the energy sector is seen as an essential measure to stabilize and improve the electricity generation capacity on the island, seeking more sustainable and lasting solutions.
