The US State Department has approved the possible sale to Taiwan of drones and missiles worth an estimated $360 million, according to the Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency.

The United States is required by law to provide Chinese-claimed Taiwan with the means to defend itself despite a lack of formal diplomatic ties, much to Beijing’s continued anger.

China has been stepping up military pressure against Taiwan, even staging war games around the island last month following Lai Ching-te’s inauguration as president.

The sale “will contribute to improving recipient security and help maintain political stability, military balance, and economic progress in the region,” the Pentagon said in separate statements Tuesday in the United States.

The sale includes Switchblade 300 anti-personnel and anti-armor loitering munitions and related equipment for an estimated cost of $60.2 million, and ALTIUS 600M-V drones and related equipment for an estimated cost of $300 million, the agency added. . Loitering munitions are small guided missiles that can fly around a target area until ordered to attack.

Taiwan’s defense ministry expressed its gratitude, especially for US efforts to increase arms sales to the island. Taiwan has repeatedly complained about delayed deliveries.

“In the face of frequent military operations by the Chinese communists around Taiwan, these arms sales items agreed with the US will have the ability to detect and attack in real time, and will be able to quickly respond to enemy threats,” he said in a statement.

Peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait requires China’s goodwill, the ministry added.

“The People’s Liberation Army is expected to end its oppressive military operations around Taiwan and jointly contribute to regional stability.”
