The US Government gave its approval this Wednesday to the sending of a new aid package valued at 360.2 million dollars (about 335.3 million euros), which includes the sale of two types of combat drones with sight focused on “containing” a possible invasion of the island by China.
The Pentagon’s Defense and Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has indicated in a statement that the package includes 720 ‘Switchblade 300’ and 101 ‘SB300 FCS’ kamikaze drones, among other unmanned aerial vehicles. The latter constitute air weapons systems that operate in a “prowling” manner, flying over the target to be shot down but attacking only when it has been fixed.
This is the fifteenth assistance package approved under the Administration of US President Joe Biden, the third since the presidential and legislative elections were held in Taiwan. The package also includes training tasks, logistical help and technical assistance if necessary.
This aid “will allow us to improve security and political stability, as well as the military balance and economic progress in the region,” states the text, which points out that it also facilitates “defense against possible future threats”, a clear reference to China. .
For its part, the Taiwanese Government has expressed its gratitude for the arms sale, which allows it to “strengthen deterrence by improving defense capabilities, until now asymmetrical.”
On June 7, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Zhang Xiaogang stressed that US arms sales to Taiwan “represent a serious violation of the ‘one China’ principle and the three Sino-US joint communiqués.” Furthermore, they “seriously harm China’s sovereignty and security interests and undermine peace and stability” in the area, as he stated.
