Japan’s Ministry of Health has reported an increase in cases of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS), a serious bacterial infection that can be fatal. As of June 2, 2024, 977 cases had been recorded in the country, thus surpassing the previous record of 941, established in 2023.

According to the latest figures available, in the first three months of the year a balance of 77 people died due to the infection.

What is streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS)?

He STSS is a rare disease that occurs when group A bacteria (streptococci) enter the bloodstream and release toxins. Initial symptoms include fever, muscle pain and vomiting, but can quickly progress to shock, multiple organ failure and even death.

Who can suffer from STSS?

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, anyone can get STSS, but certain groups are at higher riskas:

  • People over 65 years of age.
  • People with chronic diseases such as diabetes or cancer.
  • People with open wounds.
  • Children under 10 years old.

How to prevent STSS?

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.

  • Avoid close contact with sick people.

What are the symptoms of STSS?

Between the first symptoms that occur due to streptococcal toxic shock syndrome include:

  • High fever.
  • Shaking chills.
  • Muscle pains.
  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.

Some time later, after passing between 24 to 48 hoursother symptoms appear such as:

  • Hypotension (low blood pressure).
  • Organ failure (other signs that the organs are not working).
  • Tachycardia (faster heartbeat).
  • Tachypnea (rapid breathing).
