Coxabengoa, utilities vertically integrated water and energy company, reinforces its global leadership position in the water desalination sector by winning the award for phase 1 of what will be the largest desalination plant in Taiwan.

It will have a capacity of 200,000 cubic meters per day, and is located in Tainan, a city in the south of Taiwan.

Taweelah It is the first large-scale plant in the emirate that combines the production of drinking water with the generation of clean energy, thanks to the installation of a 70 MWp photovoltaic installation.

This allows the desalination plant to be self-sufficient and the execution and operation will be for 15 years of a seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant for the Southern Region Water Resources Branch, Water Resources Agency, Ministry of economic Affairs (Taiwan)as an end customer.

The construction and start-up of the plant, which will employ 200 people at the time of greatest intensity of the process, will be carried out in two phases. In phase 1, the capacity to supply 100,000 cubic meters of water per day will be reached and it will be prepared for the second phase in which 200,000 cubic meters will be reached.

Since the award of Abengoa’s assets by Grupo Cox in April 2023, the Coxabengoa team has worked to reorganize the business and assets and transform the company into a global water and energy utility. Thus, the areas of infrastructure/transmission lines have been integrated, together with Operation and Maintenance, to support the Group’s main businesses.

In addition to the awarding of the desalination plant in Taiwan, it is worth noting that Coxabengoa has put into operation one of the great milestones in the sector.

This is Taweelah, the largest reverse osmosis desalination plant in the world, located in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates). With a production of almost one million m3/day, Taweelah guarantees supply to four and a half million people throughout the year.

Taweelah is the first large-scale plant in the emirate that combines the production of drinking water with the generation of clean energy, thanks to the installation of a 70 MWp photovoltaic installation, which allows the desalination plant to be self-sufficient in renewable energy.
