There are times when loyalty to a project can take precedence over other issues. Precisely for this reason the former vocalist of Death Angel, Mark Oseguedahe had to hide from his colleagues that he was working with Kerry King until four months ago ‘From Hell I Rise’the first solo album by the guitarist of Slayer which featured a stellar lineup of outstanding thrash metal musicians.

During an intervention on the podcast Let There Be Talk by Dean Delray, Osegueda responded to the question of how he communicated to his colleagues Death Angel who was going to join the new project Kerry King. These were his words: “Oh, man. This was difficult. I had to respect the confidentiality agreement I signed with the Kerry team. Really. And it was eating me away. Because Death Angel has been on tour constantly. We were on tour when the world shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. When the world reopened, we got back on the road. And all this was happening then. I started making demos during the pandemic, and after that, I met up with Kerry to make more demos when the world opened up”.

The vocalist assured that the solo work of Kerry It was already brewing long before it was announced: “The album was made a year before it came out. And I was on tour with Death Angel. There were some nights when Rob (Cavestany, Death Angel guitarist) and I were in the lounge, just him and I, drinking, listening to music and just laughing and talking like we usually do. And it was very difficult for me not to tell him what was happening. It’s very difficult not to say: “Look, brother”.

Osegueda He was aware that this movement could be misinterpreted: “This is one of those things that, like it or not, some will think I’m a jerk, but I promised Kerry and signed a confidentiality agreement. I promised everyone that he wasn’t going to let anyone know. The only ones who knew were my girlfriend, my girl, my mother and my sister. We didn’t even tell my father because my father has a loose mouth. We didn’t even tell him then. Those were the three people who knew. And, of course, the people who were in the studio when we were recording and shit like that, which were all people who had signed the confidentiality agreement as well.”.

mark He had no choice but to communicate the news later: “It was shit, but I waited and let him know via email the same day as the official announcement of Kerry’s new band in early February. And shortly after I spoke with Rob and Ted (Aguilar, Death Angel guitarist)”.

Regarding the way in which he approached such a thorny issue, mark said the following: “I told them in the email: “Look, this is the hardest thing I have left to say to you.” And I worded it more or less like this: “This is going to be the most surprising thing in the world for you or, on the contrary, the most obvious thing in the world.” And I even said at the end, because it was an email to all the guys, “Take some time to really process all of this before you respond, before you speak. Let all this pass, and then when we meet, if you want to talk to me, then we will all talk.” And shortly after, I talked to Ted and Rob”.

His colleagues were slow to accept the facts at first: “They were still a little shocked, for sure. I could see it on their faces… We did a Zoom FaceTime call, the three of us, and they were both definitely in a state of processing it. But at the end of the call, after talking for an hour, they were supportive and happy for me. And they both said, “Now that you mention it, man, it’s the most fucking obvious thing in the world.” But it was hard, man. I am not going to lie. It’s hard, because we’ve been through a lot together, especially me and Rob.”.

There was a strong friendship involved: “I mean, not to mince words, Ted’s been in the band since 2001, and now Damien (Sisson, bass) and Will (Carroll, drums) have been in the band for over a decade. He is crazy. But of course, Rob and I have known each other since we were in the crib. So it was hard. But now Rob is very understanding. Before Kerry King’s first concert, I got a message from him saying, “Have a great concert, bro.” And all that. On the day of Kerry King’s album release, he sent me congratulations. Ted too. So they have accepted it. I think this has already focused a lot of attention on Death Angel. And it will continue to do so. But it was hard”.

Finally we will only be able to enjoy a single performance this year by Kerry King with his current project in our country, which will take place on the stage of Resurrection Festbehind the cancellation of concerts in Barcelona and Madrid due to logistical problems.
