According to a Pew Research Center survey, 25% of Americans have an unfavorable opinion of the two main candidates in the presidential elections, Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

  • 39% of Americans have a favorable opinion of Trump (compared to 37% of Biden), a figure similar to 2016 (37%).
  • However, the Republican candidate is less popular than in 2020, when 42% of those surveyed said they had a favorable opinion of the tenant of the White House.
  • Opinions favorable to Biden are lower than in 2020, when they stood at 46%.

A sign of the strong political polarization in the United States, these figures reflect partisan divisions: only 6% of Republicans and Republican-leaning voters have a favorable opinion of Biden, and only 8% of Democrats and independents Democrats have a favorable opinion of Trump.

  • In 2008, 27% of Democrats had a favorable opinion of Republican candidate John McCain, and the same percentage of Republicans had a favorable opinion of Democratic candidate Barack Obama.

This trend has intensified since the 2016 elections, which pitted Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump against each other. Since those elections, no candidate from either party has achieved a favorable opinion rate greater than 50% in this phase of the election cycle.

  • Between 1988 and 2012, in every presidential election, at least one candidate had a popularity rating of at least 50% at this point in the campaign.
