MEXICO CITY (apro).- The actress and former beauty contestant, Martha Cristiana, formally resigned from her position as director of Miss Universe Mexico this Monday, June 24, after accepting the position in May of this year. Lack of inclusion, diversity and transphobia on the part of the board of directors are the reasons for her resignation.
“Today I present my resignation to all of you because I cannot continue promising things that I know will not be fulfilled, I hope this keeps my mouth shut and that this board of directors has the intelligence to include a trans woman.”
Martha Cristiana accepted the position after the resignation of Cynthia de la Vega, who decided to withdraw from that organization due to “changes” that were contrary to her personal principles and values, as stated in a statement.
At a press conference, Martha Cristiana explained that she found it “fascinating to be able to be living those changes at that moment,” referring to the fact that there could be representation of the LGBT+ community, that there was no age limit and that the contestants could have any marital status. but this was not the case once he entered the organization.
“I have been in office for eight weeks (…) unfortunately things have not been as promised and I find myself involved in a truly uncomfortable situation where the answer to everything is: ‘Trans man?’ Not at all, zero (…) ‘Name, 40? Very old, forget it. Trans? Paying lip service, that’s not going to happen. It won’t happen, Martha Cristiana’, verbatim words. And I need to report this.”
The model recalled that her father belonged to the LGBT+ community, so she expressed that she found it regrettable that the inclusion and diversity of the contestants was not actually sought. “If beauty is not inclusive, it is not revolutionary. “Beauty is revolutionary only when it embraces diversity,” she declared.
“There is one thing that we must say and that is important, which is that there is transphobia, absolutely normalized in this country and I find it embarrassing,” Martha Cristiana also denounced.
The model separated Raúl Rocha Cantú, co-owner of the Miss Universe organization, since he is not in charge of regional aspects. According to Martha Cristiana, “his people don’t dare tell him the truth.” Likewise, the actress pointed out that Rocha Cantú has treated her well and with respect for her and her personal positions.
