Beekeeping has become a source of income and livelihood for 579 families in the department of Córdoba, Colombia. According to data from the Secretariat of Economic and Agroindustrial Development of the Government, Honey production in the department reached 300 tons in 2022, with a total of 9,543 registered hives.

“Beekeeping is a nature-based solution that has a positive impact on biodiversity and the health of ecosystems, in addition to contributing to the food security and economic stability of agricultural communities,” said Angélica Benedetti Chica, executive director. from ProMontería.

This growth is part of a global trend that shows the rise of honey as a consumer product in the world. According to Trade Map, global honey imports reached $2.2 billion in 2023, with production of 700,148 tons. Europe, in particular, is emerging as the main market, concentrating almost 50% of global imports.

“Córdoba is a strategic territory to develop beekeeping due to its rich biodiversity and favorable climatic conditions,” Benedetti Chica said. The natural wealth of this region, combined with its favourable climate, make it an ideal place for the production of high-quality honey.

When thinking about the economic development of Córdoba, the ProMontería board emphasizes the importance of doing so under a focus on sustainability and generation of shared value. “This not only guarantees the protection of our natural resources, but also promotes inclusive economic growth that benefits all parties involved: business, communities and consumers”he added.

Within the beekeeping chain in Córdoba, 45% of the producers are independent, while 24% are organized as a business and 31% as an association. Honey is the main product, but other derivatives such as biological material, wax and propolis are also marketed.

This activity represents an important opportunity to improve the income and quality of life of the families involved, while contributing to the conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity, thanks to the crucial role that bees play as pollinators.
