The president of the United States, Democrat Joe Biden, and former Republican president Donald Trump face each other this Thursday in the first televised face-to-face of the November 5 elections. They will write a new page in the long history of American presidential debates.
The debate, organized by the CNN network, will leave new scenarios. Since the first televised debate between Nixon and John F. Kennedy, no debate had been held before September. It will, in any case, be the debate with the largest audience, but it is not certain that it will have the impact of the previous ones. Another novelty is that the Presidential Debates Commission has been dispensed with so that the candidates can directly negotiate the conditions and calendar. There will be no audience, candidates’ microphones will be muted while their opponent speaks, and no prewritten notes will be allowed.
These are the keys to the appointment:
The debate between Biden and Trump
Since the October 2020 debate, Biden and Trump have not seen each other again.
A debate has never been held so early
It is not organized by
the Debates Commission
created in 1987
The initiative was
Biden’s advisors
Trump couldn’t refuse
to debate with, he said, “the senile
of Biden”
It will include two advertising blocks of three and a half minutes
The two moderators, Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, have not been negotiated with the two candidates
Live broadcasting by other stations will be allowed but they will not be able to delete CNN’s “fly”
More than five national networks will broadcast it simultaneously
After the debate, the analysts
CNN will verify possible falsehoods, but many demand that they be done
almost live with
superimposed legends
When one speaks,
the other’s microphone will be disconnected to avoid interruptions
The interventions will be two minutes with one-minute responses.
There will be no audience at the CNN studio in Atlanta
It is not clear whether the cameras showed gestural reactions from the candidates when they are not speaking.
They will not be able to abandon
the podium and approach the other candidate to avoid the bullying that Trump did to Hillary Clinton in 2016
British journalist Mark Thompson, former CEO of the New York Times and director of
the BBC, has been inspired by the first debates of 1960
between Nixon and Kennedy: “I want
return to a simple format
and classic”
CNN is in low hours and its bet can catapult its audience figures
Trump has not stopped protesting about everything and his advisors know that he will not listen to them
Biden has much more experience and will listen to his advisors who are veterans with many campaigns under their belts
Trump’s top advisor will be his personal lawyer Bob Bauer
Whether he wins (doubtful) or loses (likely), Trump will blame CNN for manipulating the debate
Biden, on the other hand, keeps his expectations low to, if he wins, overwhelm Trump.
No other presidential debate will have a larger audience than tonight
The next debate will be
in September organized by the ABC network
In any case, the undisputed winner will be CNN
