David Kershenobich was announced this Thursday by Claudia Sheinbaum, virtual president, as the next Secretary of Health.

During the presentation at MIDE, Sheinbaum highlighted that Kershenobich is a surgeon specializing in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

“As you know, he participated in dialogues for transformation coordinating the right to health axis,” he added.

What other secretaries were announced with David Kershenobich?

Claudia Sheinbaum revealed 5 new officials of the next presidential cabinet who will begin their work starting next Tuesday, October 1.

Missing from the presentation was Rogelio Ramírez de la O, Secretary of the Treasury who will remain in his position “indefinitely” at the request of the virtual president.

“We were going to introduce Dr. Rogelio Ramírez de la O today, but he could not attend because he has activities as Secretary of Finance and Public Credit,” he said.


The other four new federal secretariats announced on Thursday, June 27 are:

  • Luz Elena Gonzalez in the Secretary of Energy.
  • Jesús Esteva Medina in the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation.
  • Raquel Buenrostro, current head of Economy, in the Secretariat of Public Function.
  • Edna Elena Vega at the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development.

Who is David Kershenobich Stalnikowitz?

David Kershenobich Stalnikowitzson of Jacob Kershenobich and Flora Stalnikowitz, Born on November 20, 1942 in the then Federal District; However, from a very young age he moved to Tampico, Tamaulipas, where he attended primary, secondary and high school.

Kershenobich, who was coordinator of forums for health transformation during the Sheinbaum campaign, studied the career of Surgeon at the Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) with the professional thesis “Fetal Hemoglobin in the Newborn”.

He subsequently completed his residency in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the Salvador Zubirán Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition and, later, specialized in Hepatology at the Royal Free Hospital in London, England. He also obtained a Doctorate in Medicine at the University of London with the thesis “Transferrin Metabolism”.

Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to the study of the pathophysiology of Hepatic cirrhosis, mainly in the field of Fibrosis, together with his colleagues, doctors Marcos Rojkind and Ruy Pérez Tamayo. He also founded the Liver and Pancreas Research Unit located at the General Hospital of Mexico, as well as the Mexican Foundation for Liver Health (Fundhepa).

His career in teaching and academia

Since 1975 it is Professor of Gastroenterology at UNAM and has more than 500 medical publications, of which 249 are articles in magazines such as New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He is the author of 4 books and has been editor and member of editorial boards of multiple national and foreign magazines.

He is currently a Level III Emeritus Researcher of the National System of Researchers and has served as president of the Mexican Association of Internal Medicine, the Mexican Association of Gastroenterology, the Mexican Association of Hepatology and, from 2000 to 2002, as president of the International Association for the Study of the Liver.

Regarding his life in the Academy, since 2007 he has directed the Interdisciplinary Research Seminar in Biomedicine at UNAM, while from 2005 to 2012 he was a member of the Governing Board of the Maximum House of Studies.

Due to his notable career, Kershenobich has received several recognitions, including the Medical Merit Award 2014, the “Miguel Otero Arce” Research Award 1996 and the “Eduardo Liceaga” Award 2008. His research in the area of ​​Sciences has also been recognized. Biological and Health Sciences of the Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM).
