A silent place: Day one, beyond being a horror movie

A Quiet Place: Day One, directed by Michael Sarnoski, is the new installment of the franchise of A Quiet Place, whose two previous films were directed by John Krasinski, as well as one of the most interesting premieres of this year’s summer season, after its release was postponed twice.

This prequel, starring Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinnwill give us a preview of the invasion of those blind aliens with super-acute hearing who, as we already know, will force humanity to remain silent in order to survive.

What is the context of A Quiet Place: Day One?

We met in New York, for some details and the chronology of Krasinski’s films, back in the 2010s; about a year before meeting the Abbott family.

In the midst of the daily routine of the Big Apple, we meet Samira (Lupita Nyong’o), who will be caught in the chaos of the first moments of the aliens’ arrival. To escape from them, together with Eric (Joseph Quinn), she will have to overcome several obstacles.

So far, we have a “predictable” context of the story written by Sarnoski and Krasinski himself. However, as it develops, we find certain details that remove the label of horror film and take it to other genres.

What makes peculiar A Quiet Place: Day One within the franchise?

While it is always difficult to tell a story that, in a certain way, we already know what it is about, the film relies on the music of Alexis Grapsas, as well as the photography of Pat Scola, to create its own identity within the now trilogy of A Quiet Place.

Obviously, the participation of the aliens does not go unnoticed and, contrary to what could have been: an overload of this element in each scene to try to give a different look – in addition to the fact that it is just the moment of the invasion -, this The “resource” of the story is complemented in a natural way throughout the entire feature film, while it paralyzes you or makes you jump out of your seat in each sequence that appears.

The combo is complete with the editing of Andrew Mondshein and Gregory Plotkin, which transforms the film. For moments in sequences worthy of a blockbuster action, then leading us through terrifying moments and plunging us into a river full of suspense.

So, A Quiet Place: Day OneIs it cinema or not?

Many actors and directors point out that the challenge or true achievement of their job, which is interpreting and telling stories, lies in doing so without saying a word or with the minimum possible dialogue for the characters. Wow, pure body expression and emotional projection.

Given the story’s theme, this aspect should be the basic and, perhaps, the least important to trigger all the emotions when watching the film. But the performances of Lupita Nyong’o (who can leave one cold with her expressions of panic) and Joseph Quinn make this the main attraction of the film.

The work of both actors, together with the production and direction of the film, ensure that, for just over an hour and a half, the audience is immersed in that same silence. So much so that you can barely hear someone taking a sip of their drink or an exit door slamming inside the same room, making the audience nervous. Even the most talkative people stop making a sound and creating such an atmosphere in the cinema these days can be very difficult.

Ya say that A Quiet Place: Day One could leave viewers with a lump in their throat or a tear on their cheek—for those climaxes that highlight the human spirit. It is the feeling and everyone’s opinion, but if there’s one thing we’re sure of, it’s that it’s worth seeing on the big screen.

Now, if you’re a fan, you’ll find several elements that can satisfy your peculiar tastes. Although it’s also a great option to get into the franchise and even put together a marathon.

The distribution of A Quiet Place: Day One, which premiered in theaters in Mexico City this Thursday, June 27, is complemented by Alex Wolff and Djimon Hounsou, who plays Henri, because in addition to the aliens with super-developed hearing, there had to be someone else who connected with the other films.
