International Pride Day 2024

The City Council collaborates with the Association of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Trans and Intersexuals of Cantabria (ALEGA) in the celebration of this day that will take place in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento

Santander City Council, once again this year, supports and collaborates in the organisation of different protest and recreational events on the occasion of LGTBIQ+ Pride Day, which is being celebrated today and whose main events will take place tomorrow in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

Thus, prior to tomorrow’s event, the mayor, Gema Igual, accompanied by members of the group and the Councilor for Equality, Zulema Gancedo, has deployed the commemorative canvas from the balcony of the Town Hall.

“From the Santander City Council we consider that it is essential to fight for the rights of this group and make visible the feelings of justice and equality inherent to it,” Gancedo highlighted.

Likewise, on the occasion of this day, the Plenary Session of the City Council will approve today an institutional declaration, at the proposal of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities (FEMP), for equality and justice for all people, to stop hate speech against the LGTBI+ collective, promote diversity education and work at the local level to raise awareness on issues related to sexual orientation so that each person is respected equally in our society.

Program

This year’s programme will begin at 12:30 in the Town Hall Square with the reading of the opening speech by journalist Diego Garcés, followed by the raising of the flag.

Starting at 1:00 p.m. there will be children’s activities and the Ívalo concert and from 2:30 p.m. there will be a community picnic and vermouth that will be accompanied by a session by DJ Borre and at 4:00 p.m. there will be a concert by Lúkaro.

At 6:00 p.m., the demonstration will begin, from the Puertochico roundabout to the Town Hall, where the manifesto will be read and the Aleguita 2024 award will be presented.

Starting at 8:00 p.m., the performances of the groups ‘Candela Fuego’ and ‘La Pikasso’ have been organized and at 8:30 p.m. one of the most attractive and popular proposals of this day will take place, the heel race that will be presented by Venedita Von Dash and the subsequent awards ceremony.

At 9:30 p.m. the ‘Great Pride Show 2024’ will be held with Venedita Von Dash as the star guest and concerts by Mia Moi, Kiny Kinientos, Candela Fuego, La Pikasso, Gran Nogara and Farruka.

International LGTBIQ+ Pride Day

The origin of International LGTBI Pride Day dates back to 1969, when the well-known Stonewall riots (New York) took place, which marked the beginning of the fight of this group for their rights.

In the early hours of June 28, 1969, New York City police raided the Stonewall pub, leading to a series of demonstrations that escalated into violent incidents.
