The Unlikely Review: Thy Art Is Murder – Holy War | Science of Noise

If you are a regular reader of this section, you will remember this moment, sir. Wolf in giving me the witness my dear Didac:

«To compensate for so much brightness, sweetening and serenity, I name my great friend Abel Marin, so that he can be the next to talk about the album of a group that is not his style, but that he is going to enjoy greatly. So get ready with the kings of the deathcore (with permission from Lorna Shore), and the fantastic one is put into action Holy War (2015) from the Australians Thy Art Is Murder

Hooombreeeeee, if I have come to enjoy it, we will see it during the development of the article. Because I’m not going to deny it, the challenge I was exposing myself to was attractive, but a priori a bit of a toad too. So paraphrasing Total sinister:

«There is no question nor depression
Let him learn to swim
They all drown in liquor
They all get stuck in bread (…)»

Well, let’s go through this procedure with a toast to clear up the throat clearing after trying to emulate some gutturals of this barbaric sound.

Many of you who will be reading these lines will already know who these are. Thy Art is Murder that we are dealing with today, because we are not going to deny it, the gossip calls and that hater What we carry inside stirs us to sharpen the knife against the poor victim who faces this adventure. But for those who don’t, it’s always good to make a short summary of the trajectory of these Australians.

Australia, land of my loved ones AC DC at the same time that also Airbourne, Rose Tattoo, Jet either Minogue Kylie (really? You’ll think. Well yes, teenage platonic love), they are also lavished on more extreme and current fields such as Parkway Drivewhich lead one of the days of the Rock Fest of this year along with these Thy Art Is Murder that concern us. So, accustomed to the heat of their homeland, the east will seem most comfortable to them.

Thy Art Is Murder They have been active for a whopping 18 years now, so they cannot be classified as new, although for me it is the first time I have encountered one of their works. Lately, having focused on sounds further away from what is being reviewed here, it has been quite difficult for me to face my friend’s offering. Didac. But this section is what it’s about, throwing ourselves into the mountains, like a Spartan, dressed only in a loincloth to harden ourselves as warriors.

If anyone, after reading this story, wants to know my opinion on similar styles, you can read my other gallumbo fight against the heartbreaking jaws of Meshuggah.

But I will not dwell any longer on this, our agony. What is the first thing that catches my attention? Its logo, cooler than on its first albums, has always caught my attention on any poster it was on. It was even one of the unknown formations that I wanted to discover live, as I pointed out above, in this Rock Fest 2024.

Still, I’ve looked for live performances by these Australians and I find the usual stuff in the formations of deathcore either metalcorethey look more like computer scientists than musicians metal. Something more accentuated if we look at the current lineup after the replacement of their classic vocalist.

I don’t say this as a derogatory thing, but if before we identified the musician/follower metalhead With their elastics and long hair, now with their horn-rimmed glasses, their carefully groomed beards, their well-done hairstyles (or scrupulously well-shaven heads) and their multitude of tattoos, we could not tell them apart from a technician from any IT department in an important multinational in the sector.

But as for the album, the cover photo, the work of Thomas Savageis the most disturbing thing. I am more of a fan of classic illustrations for covers than of photographs, but the coldness that it transmits, with those bluish tones, leaving the face of the image of what would represent the Christian virgin in the shadows is the most striking. If you look closely, little by little you will see that the face hidden in the shadow of the veil ends up revealing a fixed and penetrating gaze that chills the soul. There is no better letter of introduction.

Musically, well, what can I say, it has gotten to the point of saturating me a bit. It is true that the fact of not being a death metal in the old way, it is more varied and mashed, giving rise to a headbanging automatic, like the spring-necked dog that was placed on the trays of cars, while listening. But vocally C.J. McMahonthe guttural donkey, apart from having a horrible bad taste due to that predilection for leopard shirts (as I have seen in some photos from the time and the occasional live video) and not being at all “Mahon” (nice , sorry for the horrible joke) because it seems that he was fired from the band for some controversial statements against the community transit just overwhelms me.

In the past there was a time when I gave the rawest sounds, but today I have them more set aside for specific moments. The voice ends up becoming monotonous despite using variations, never going below the guttural style. Maybe a little more melodic variation or louder intervals would make for a more enjoyable listen that would prevent me from disconnecting, because musically I love them.

If I have to choose songs, it is obviously the one that gives the album its title. “Holy War” is one of the most enjoyable on the album, as is “Emptiness” with its calm beginning followed by the house-brand sonic punch.

Regular playback disc? Possibly not, but it does recur at times. They will not enter me status of essential groups, but I will go see them soon without prejudice.

And now, at this point, who will be the next victim? None other than the man with the best hair in the newsroom, with permission from our beloved leader.

Ruben de HaroWith the love that I have for you, I dust off and hand you one of the jewels of our national metal. Taking advantage of that Jero Ramiro brings to Legends this year’s classics SantaI give you the Reincarnation (1984), an album that this year celebrates its 40th Anniversary and will bring the glory of those metallic 80s hidden under the government-sponsored Madrid scene.

Health, marks and metal.

Abel Marin

Metal lover in all its styles. I live in the hope of being able to grow old attending concert halls and festivals. If rockers go to hell, let them save me a seat and a beer.

Health and Heavy Metal.
