The national government froze gas and electricity rates: they will not increase in July

The national government of Javier Milei announced that it will postpone the increases in gas and electricity rates that were planned for July. In this way, they will avoid a strong impact on the pocketbook along with the inflation expected for next month.

This measure by the Government would only be in effect for July, with the aim of recovering purchasing power. It was expected that the increase in tariffs would be one of the reasons why the Consumer Price Index would rebound.

The Government’s message

The determination will be directly reflected in the electricity and gas bills that arrive in August of this year. According to the Ministry of Energy, “if a consumer spent exactly the same consumption in June as in July, his bill will have the same amount to pay.”

It is worth noting that at the beginning of June, the maximum consumption limits that would be subsidized by the State had been changed, as well as the bonuses on wholesale prices for those with low and middle incomes.

In this way, they seek to begin the process to “move from a generalized subsidy regime to a focused one, in which the user can know the cost of kW of electric energy and m3 of natural gas, which is identical for everyone.”

In addition, it will be possible to know the percentage of assistance that the user obtains “according to their ability to pay and that reaches up to a limited consumption limit through the recognition of a lower payment (bonus).”

High-income households

With the intention of reducing public spending, the Government warned of a restructuring of energy subsidies, in which there will be a total elimination of the contribution to high-income households and a gradual reduction for other sectors.

A level segmentation system was implemented to determine the level of subsidy corresponding to each household, with a classification into three categories: Level 1 (no subsidy), Level 2 (partial subsidy) and Level 3 (major subsidy). Users must register in the Registry of Access to Energy Subsidies (RASE) and thus check their subsidy.
