Fresh Direct launches plastic-free packaging for avocados in the UK

Fresh Direct, a major supplier of fresh produce to catering in the United Kingdom, has introduced a new plastic-free packaging solution for its two-pack of avocados, in collaboration with Westfalia Fruit, its main supplier partner for this fruit. This initiative represents the first application of this type of packaging in the restaurant sector, replacing conventional plastic packaging with a paper-based alternative. This new packaging material comes from FSC approved and actively managed forests, ensuring sustainability through tree regeneration and replanting, and is fully recyclable.

The avocados are presented in pairs in co-branded packaging, providing an extra protective layer to preserve the quality of the product until it reaches customers. Paul Nieduszynski, Managing Director of Sysco GB, said the development was part of the company’s drive to minimise its environmental footprint, alongside other initiatives such as removing 50 tonnes of plastic from its soft fruit packaging. He also stressed the importance of making ongoing, incremental changes with suppliers to achieve greater sustainability within the organisation.
