The program ‘She is a Virtual Astronaut 2024’ opened its second call for applications of the year. An invitation to girls from all over Colombia to embark on an experience that will allow them to explore the world of space science.

Developed by the She Is Foundation, in alliance with NASA’s Space Center, this project, which has managed to graduate and certify more than 500 Colombian girls, seeks to reach every corner of the country through virtual education.

With the support of AES and Organon, they will celebrate the seventh edition of She is a virtual astronautwhich aims to train girls and young people between 11 and 16 years old through a platform e-learning in Steam education programs (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics), as well as the development of powerful skills such as emotional intelligence, critical thinking, leadership and solving current problems through academic modules, inspirational events, webinars, among others.

The program will be carried out over four months of virtual learning, during which more than 100 girls from all over Colombia will develop important skills for their academic and interpersonal development. At the end of the program, all participants will present a final project, and The two best projects will be awarded an academic immersion at NASA’s Space Center Houston in 2025.

The participants are from remote and vulnerable territories in some departments such as Putumayo, Chocó, Bolívar, Meta, Santander, Magdalena and Cundinamarca.

“In this second stage, our goal is to reach the most remote corners of Colombia. This will be possible thanks to the invaluable support of various companies and actors who have been fundamental to the expansion of this program. Today, we not only seek to transform the lives of hundreds of girls through education, but also contribute to the development of more prosperous regions and peace in our country,” says Leidy Martínez, project director of She is an astronaut.

How to take part?

The call will be open from June 20 to July 20, interested girls must meet the following requirements:

  • Participants must be girls between 11 and 16 years old.
  • Not having any family ties in the first degree of consanguinity with a public official in decision-making positions and management of public funds, due to conflict of interest and following the guidelines of the She Is Foundation code of ethics.
  • The family group must belong to groups A (population in extreme poverty), B (population in moderate poverty) or C (population in vulnerability) of Sisbén IV. Registration to Sisbén, or population from qualified areas and population groups in vulnerable situations, will be verified, in accordance with the biases of Conpes and DNP.
  • Receive academic training at a public institution of basic, secondary or technical secondary education and demonstrate excellent academic performance.
  • Guarantee access to the Internet and the technological tools necessary for the development of the program, whether their own or provided by the institution.
  • Guarantee the availability of time for training.
