MIAMI GARDENS, Florida, USA —

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni will not be able to coach against Peru on Saturday in the Copa América after being suspended for one match due to his team’s delays in the second half of their previous two matches.

CONMEBOL’s disciplinary commission said Friday that Scaloni had been suspended for one match for violating the rules of the continental tournament.

Article 145 of the regulations states that “if the players appear on the field of play later than the time scheduled for its start or resumption,” the team will receive a suspension warning and then be sanctioned if the offense is repeated.

Both in the 2-0 victory against Canada in the debut and then in the 1-0 victory against Chile last Tuesday, the Argentine team entered late for the restart. Canadians complained publicly about the delay.

Due to the sanction, Scaloni will not be able to be on the bench against Peru. He will also not be able to appear at the press conference prior to the match against the Peruvians in the closing match of Group A.

Argentina has already qualified for the quarterfinals of the tournament and needs to score a point to secure first place in the bracket.
