Disney+ has in its catalog one of the best fictions of recent years: original, daring and kind
The world of crime dominates fiction. Everywhere you look there are ‘true crimes’, disturbing documentaries or suspense series about murders. It is a genre that has gained a lot of prominence in recent years and streaming platforms know it: they give their subscribers exactly what they want to see.
In this whole wave of ‘thrillers’, a production appeared that stood out with a unique personality, a lot of originality and little restlessness: Only murders in the building is, for users of SensaCine, the best crime series of the last decade. It is placed above reacher, Mare of Easttown and Lupine.
Only murders in the building needs little introduction. Created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, and starring Martin himself along with Martin Short and Selena Gomez, the series laughs – in good faith – at the ‘boom’ of ‘true crime’ podcasts. This particular trio ends up, accidentally, investigating the death of one of the residents of the Arconia building where they live. They are only united by their love of podcasts, but they will end up closer than they thought.
We don’t know if Steve Martin planned to extend the premise for three seasons, but it has been so well received that Hulu wanted to continue its legacy with new batches of episodes. It is currently renewed for a fourth installment that we hope will see the light of day in 2024.
Martin began developing it ten years before its release. Originally he was going to focus on a group of three older men who are united by their love of solving crimes. Since they are afraid to leave their building, they focus on the environment that is closest to them. Years later the idea changed and one of the protagonists was changed to a young woman, who, without a doubt, has helped give it a much fresher and more striking touch. If you add the podcast world to that, you have a current and attractive series.
“I love her infinitely”
As we mentioned, the series is a ‘rare bird’ in this world of dark ‘thrillers’ and adaptations of other products that have already worked – such as the recent success of fallout-. On the opposite side is Only murders in the building, a friendly fiction that smells like a classic. Maybe it’s because of Martin’s charm or because of his more traditional ‘whodunit’ touch, it seems like the series comes from another era. And how much it is appreciated.
