Arab League welcomes report on UN agency after Israeli attacks

In a statement published by his spokesman, Jamal Rushdi, Aboul Gheit considered that the report of the independent committee headed by former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna demonstrates beyond all reasonable doubt that the Israeli accusations are false and have no validity.

The complaints from that country are part of a systematic campaign to eliminate the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (Unrwa), said the regional leader.

He highlighted that this UN institution has a “fundamental role in providing livelihoods and employment to some six million Palestinians.”

Aboul Gheit called on Western countries that stopped funding UNRWA following Israeli accusations to re-distribute those funds, which he considered essential for its functioning.

Unwra is under fire following the accusation by Benjamin Netanyahu’s government against 12 of its 13,000 employees for allegedly participating in the operation of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on that date.

Although both the agency and the UN announced an immediate investigation, numerous Western countries, including the United States, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, suspended their funding.

The investigation report, published last Monday, concluded that Israel has no evidence to substantiate its allegations, despite repeated requests for “names and evidence that would allow UNRWA to open an investigation.”
