‘Titanic’? ‘The Godfather’? ‘Psychosis’? The best movie of all time revealed by Rotten Tomatoes

Rotten Tomatoes has compiled a list of the 300 greatest movies of all time, and the top 10 may surprise you.

Review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes has revealed its list of the films best rated of all time.

The list of 300 titles is based on reviews from critics, as Rotten Tomatoes collects online reviews from writers who are certified members of various writers’ guilds or film critics associations. All of them have obtained the ‘Certified Fresh’ rating (between 100 and 75%) and have been classified according to the rating of each film on the ‘Tomatometer’ and its audience score.

So, is it ‘Titanic’?

No, it’s not even in the Top 10.

‘The Godfather’?

Almost, but Francis Ford Coppola’s epic crime drama took second place on the podium.

The misunderstood masterpiece that is ‘Flubber’, Les Mayfield’s 1997 comic gem starring the one and only Robin Williams?

There is too much to wait for.

First place goes to another 1997 film: Curtis Hanson’s neo noir gem, **’LA Confidential’** based on James Ellroy’s 1990 novel of the same name.

And we don’t dislike this. The film, starring Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, James Cromwell, Kim Basinger, Kevin Spacey and David Strathairn, is nothing less than a tense atmospheric miracle that emanates a unique attraction. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards at the time, including best picture. It only won two: best supporting actress for Basinger and best adapted screenplay. ‘Titanic’ won in all other categories for which ‘LA Confidential’ was nominated.

But, I repeat, it didn’t make the Top 10, not even the Top 300. Delayed justice, of course, but a bit harsh.

We will not make a list of the 300 best movies (you can find them here), but here you go top 20:

  1. ‘LA Confidential’ (1997)
  2. ‘The Godfather’ (1972)
  3. ‘Casablanca’ (1942)
  4. ‘The Seven Samurai’ (1954)
  5. ‘Parasites’ (2019)
  6. ‘Schindler’s List’ (1993)
  7. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ (2022)
  8. ‘Toy Story 2’ (1999)
  9. ‘Chinatown’ (1974)
  10. ‘The Law of Silence’ (1954)
  11. ‘The Battle of Algiers’ (1966)
  12. ‘Toy Story’ (1995)
  13. ‘Rear Window’ (1954)
  14. ‘Modern Times’ (1936)
  15. ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ (2010)
  16. ‘Eva Naked’ (1950)
  17. ‘Spirited Away’ (2001)
  18. ‘Up’ (2009)
  19. ‘The Third Man’ (1949)
  20. ‘Spotlight’ (2015)

It’s not a bad list, all in all, despite the obvious absence of women filmmakers in the top positions; the fact that ‘Twilight of the Gods’ (27) should have easily been in the top 5; ‘Spotlight’ is overrated; and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ occupies an alarming place.

Furthermore, what’Ratatouille is doing with only 119 is a kind of farce. And where, tell me, is ‘The Exorcist’? It is not in the Top 300. Scandalous.

And in case you were wondering, the most recent film on the list—here in the Top 100—is ‘Those who stay’ from last year, which was ranked number 36. It was one of our favorites from last year, but we would have liked to see ‘Past Lives’ sneaking in there.

What do you think of Rotten Tomatoes’ 300 Greatest Movies of All Time? And which films do you think deserved to make the cut?

While you reflect, here is the trailer for the best official movie of all time:

Definitely worth seeing again.
