Debate in Ecuador about lack of food in prisons

Through a statement, the SNAI stated that in all deprivation centers in the country “food is guaranteed” for all prisoners.

The entity added that the prison authorities have implemented measures to comply with and guarantee this service, in accordance with current legal regulations.

However, this Friday, the Coordinator for Peace, Sovereignty, Integration and Non-Interference (CPAZ) stated that there is a “genocide against the imprisoned population” and demanded that the Government of President Daniel Noboa comply with the Universal Declaration of Rights. Humans and the Constitution.

In a statement, to which Prensa Latina had access, CPAZ pointed out that there is a serious violation of the human rights of more than 30 thousand men and women, some of them pregnant and breastfeeding, whose situation has worsened in recent weeks.

“They are literally starving, receiving only one meal a day and without access to the commissary due to lack of operation,” said the group, which also warned of the lack of medicines and medical care.

This week, relatives of people deprived of liberty gathered in Quito, outside the SNAI, to denounce that they did not hire food suppliers for the inmates in time.

Since last January 9, President Noboa decreed the existence of an internal armed conflict, control of the penitentiaries has been in the hands of the Armed Forces.

According to experts and activists, prisons went from being in the hands of the leaders of criminal gangs to military control in which there are no guarantees of rights.
