Is this the first time it happens?

It is not the first time that atrocious acts have been seen due to challenges delivered through the web.

In 2019, a challenge called the “blue whale game” went viral where an administrator gave different challenges to the players, ranging from cutting themselves, standing on the edge of a bridge, reaching the end, which consisted of taking their own life.

Its dissemination began through the Internet in May 2016 and originated on the Russian social network Vkontakte.

The game created by a 21-year-old Russian at the time named Philipp Budeikin, a former psychology student expelled from his university. Budeikin stated that his purpose was to “cleanse society”, pushing those he considered “useless people in life” to suicide.

The Blue Whale started in 2013 with another name, “F57”, one of the names of the so-called “group of death” on VKontakte. Although in the initial cases of suicides reported in Russia, a direct connection to the game could not be established.

What does it consist of? It is a game in which the victims are children and adolescents, who are ‘invited’ to pass one test per day for fifty days. The term “blue whale” refers to the phenomenon of strandings in cetaceans, which is compared to suicide. The last challenge they have to overcome.

To complete the tasks (50 in total) there are so-called ‘online tutors’ who use fake profiles on Facebook and distribute messages with challenges through this social network or through WhatsApp.
