Devastation and at least three deaths in Oklahoma due to a string of fierce tornadoes

At least Three people, including a child, died in tornadoes in the state of Oklahomaauthorities reported this Sunday while assessing the damage to homes and businesses caused by strong winds and flooding.

According to the AP news agency, dozens of tornadoes reported have caused chaos in the central United States since Friday, with flood warnings in effect even today in the region and other nearby states such as Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Texas.

In Oklahoma, a tornado devastated the town of Holdenvilleof about 5,000 inhabitants, on Saturday night, and killed at least three people, in addition to leaving a balance of four injuredHughes County Emergency Services said in a statement. Holdenville is approximately 129 kilometers from Oklahoma City.

“My prayers go out to the people who lost loved ones to the tornadoes that hit Oklahoma last night,” Gov. Kevin Stitt said in a statement.

Stitt issued an executive order declaring a state of emergency, while crews cleared debris and assessed damage.

Almost 33,000 users were without electricity in Oklahoma Sunday morning, according to poweroutage.us, which monitors power outages. In Texas, there were almost 67,000.

Severe damage from the storm was reported in Sulfur, southern Oklahoma, where authorities reported several injuries.

The Murray County Police Department called on citizens to move away from the city to clear the way for rescuers after extensive tornado damage, according to a statement posted by the agency on Facebook.

“Stay home and don’t come and watch”the police department said.

A hospital was damaged in Marietta, according to the Oklahoma Emergency Management Agency, which added that Interstate 35 is closed at the Texas border “due to overturned vehicles and downed wires in the road.”

Residents of other states were also recovering from the disaster. A tornado in a suburb of Omaha, Nebraska, destroyed homes and businesses Saturday, destroying first agricultural crops, then suburbs and then an Iowa town.
