First trial against coup plotters begins in Germany

According to the ARD agency, the start of the hearing had to be delayed by more than an hour due to the influx of people who wanted to observe the consideration of the case.

The detainees are accused of belonging to a terrorist group and preparing actions of high treason.

For its part, the investigation classifies them as part of the paramilitary wing of the conspirators, since it was assumed that among the tasks of this particular group of suspects was the seizure of power by force of arms.

One of the defendants is also accused of attempted murder.

The hearings, in which 27 people are involved, are scheduled until January 2025.

Accusations of preparing a coup d’état were also presented in Frankfurt am Main and Munich, while the trial of the organizers will begin on May 21 and June 18.

On December 7, 2022, it was learned that the coup attempt had been thwarted, which is why the security services detained 25 of more than 50 suspects.

The operation became one of the most important in the history of the European country, while searches were carried out in 11 of the 16 federal states of Germany and in more than 130 houses and apartments.

At the same time, the organization of the conspirators turned out to be large and branched, as it included the heir of one of the princely dynasties, a politician, military personnel and soldiers of the special forces of the Ministry of Defense.

The investigation classifies the group of conspirators as Reichsburgers, also known as citizens of the Reich, which emerged in Germany in the 1980s and now has approximately 23,000 followers.

According to its leaders, Germany exists within the borders of 1937, they do not recognize the current government and declare that the country, as in the post-war period, is occupied by the allies.

The Reichsburgers often organize military reconstructions and hold meetings behind closed doors and print their own documents because they consider those issued by the German authorities invalid.

For a long time, the intelligence services believed that the movement did not represent a threat to the constitutional order, as it was highly fragmented and had no structure.

However, according to the source, his radicalization began in the mid-2010s. mem/amp
