In statements to Prensa Latina, Baboun denounced that many media professionals lost their lives in that territory during the last seven months as a result of Israeli attacks and bombings.

This award represents the world’s recognition of the injustice that is being committed, said the diplomat.

During the World Conference on Freedom of the Press, held in Chile, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization decided to award the Guillermo Cano award to communicators in Gaza.

The recognition was received by the president of the Palestinian Union of Journalists, Nasser Abu Baker.

“In these times of darkness and hopelessness, we want to convey a strong message of solidarity and recognition to those who are covering this crisis in such dramatic circumstances,” said Mauricio Weibel, president of the jury.

Meanwhile, the director general of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, pointed out that this is a tribute to the courage of communicators who face difficult and dangerous circumstances.

“For yet another year, the Award reminds us of the importance of collective commitment to ensure that journalists around the world can continue to carry out their essential work of reporting and investigating,” he said.

The Guillermo Cano award, created in 1997, is the only one awarded to press professionals within the UN system and is named after the Colombian communicator murdered in front of the offices of his newspaper, El Espectador, in Bogotá, Colombia, on the 17th. December 1986.
