The Senate Chamber approved and sent off to complete its second procedure, the motion that grants the nationality thanks to the writer Gioconda Belli Pereira, born in Nicaragua and who was expatriated in 2023 under the mandate of Daniel Ortega.

This is an initiative presented by senators Francisco Chahuán, Fidel Espinoza, Carlos Kuschel, Gastón Saavedra and Enrique Van Rysselberghe and which was studied by the Commission on Human Rights, Nationality and Citizenship.

It was a member of that body, Senator Francisco Chahuán, who informed the Chamber of the scope of the project and referred to the life and career of the poet and novelist.

Then, Senator Matías Walker highlighted the figure of the author Gioconda Belli Pereira and announced his support for the initiative, according to the Senate website.

It should be noted that Gioconda Belli Pereira was born in Nicaragua on December 9, 1948 and is a poet and novelist. She has 4 children and since 1990 she has alternated her time between the United States and Nicaragua, settling permanently in her country of origin in 2013.

From a very young age he participated in the revolutionary movement that overthrew Anastasio Somoza in 1979. He held important positions in the government and the Sandinista party, from which he separated in 1993.

Her activism led her to join the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) from 1970 to 1993, joining the fight against the dictatorship of the Anastasio Somoza dynasty and, later, the management of the Sandinista Popular Revolution.

She is the author of eight novels, a book of essays, a memoir of her revolutionary years, eight books of poetry and four stories for children. Her works have been translated into more than twenty languages.
