Saint Petersburg (Russia), June 7 (EFE).- The president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, today presented his country’s candidacy for his country’s entry into the BRICS group of emerging countries when speaking at the Saint Petersburg Economic Forum.

“We confirm ourselves in the justice of the multipolar world, in the formation of new blocks like the BRICS, to which we aspire to belong in the shortest possible time,” he said.

Arce, who explained the pillars of the Bolivian economic model, stressed that joining the BRICS is “a great opportunity” that would support the transformations and industrialization process underway in the Andean country.

“The BRICS economies have broken the hegemony of the United States (…) and are the hope of development, cooperation and complementarity,” he stated.

Just before, the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, supported during his speech the entry of new countries into the BRICS, which Iran, Saudi Arabia and Egypt joined this year.

“BRICS has great potential for the entry of new members and, of course, we welcome and support the desire of partners interested in developing contacts on different continents,” he assured.

Putin highlighted that thanks to the entry of five new countries on January 1, which also includes the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia, the group’s gross domestic product now represents 36% of the entire world.

Bolivia is one of the countries that has shown the greatest interest in joining the BRICS, something that the Argentine president, Javier Milei, renounced at the last moment at the end of December.

In fact, according to the Kremlin, this issue was part of the agenda of the meeting between Putin and Arce on Thursday at the Constantine Palace in the former tsarist capital.
