Giorgia Meloniprime minister and favorite to win the elections to the European Parliament in Italy, went to vote this Saturday in Rome shortly after the opening of the polls, and considered it “important” to exercise the right to vote for the future of the EU.

“It is important to vote because it decides our future for the next five years”declared the president after having cast her vote at a school in the Mostacciano neighborhood, in the southeast of the Italian capital.

Meloni presents himself in the elections to the European Parliament with his far-right force Brothers of Italy, and according to the surveys it is expected that it will be first and obtain around 27% of the votes. Despite being the candidate for elections, she made progress from the beginning that He will resign from the European seat to focus on the Italian leadership.

Her goal has been to exercise a candidacy with symbolic leadership in a campaign very focused on her figure, while she tries to catapult her project from Italy to the European Union, where she intends to change the correlation of forces with the set of forces that she presides over in the group of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR).

Another of the leaders who also went to vote in the elections – which began this afternoon and will continue throughout the day on Sunday – was Matteo SalviniItalian vice president, partner of Meloni in his government coalition and leader of the far-right League party, which presents the controversial general in the European elections. “A vote for peace, against bombers like (Emmanuel) Macron,” said Salvini, referring to the French president, whom he criticizes for his military proposal to support Ukraine in the war with Russia.

The League presents itself in a different group from Meloni in Europe, in its case with Identity and Democracy, to which Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally also belongs in France.

Beyond the EU, for which Italy will elect 76 deputies in a Parliament of 720, part of the Italian citizens are also called to vote this weekend in almost half of the municipalitiesas well as for the Piedmont Regional Council, in the north of the country.

High abstention is expected for elections such as the European ones, which could reach 50% of the electorate, according to analysts.

The set of elections this weekend in Italy are also a political thermometer for the Meloni Government, more than a year and a half after coming to power, in addition to measuring the push of the opposition of the Democratic Party (PD) and the Movement 5 Stars (M5S).
