The elections in the European Union were held over the weekend, which determined the composition of the next legislature of the European Parliament, which will carry out its duties from July 16 until 2029. The first conclusions after Sunday’s results show a victory for the pro-European parties, that is, those aligned with the right-wing currents. Likewise, the defeat of the ruling party in France led to the dissolution of the National Assembly and the call for early elections.

Meanwhile, in Belgium, The poor results of the Liberal Party led to the resignation of Prime Minister Alexander de Croo. The electoral roll for the elections of the next legislature reached 300 million people and in countries such as Belgium, Germany, Malta and Austria, people aged 16 and over were able to exercise their right to vote.

EPP triumphed in parliament

Meanwhile, the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, He expressed that the following weeks will be fundamental for the constitution of the European Parliament. “Weeks of negotiations are beginning to establish the groups that will make up the Parliament in its tenth legislature and form majorities to work on a political program that marks the path of the European Union,” said the president.

Challenges of the next legislature

With the advance of the right in the European Parliament, the question arises as to what the future of the continent will be in three fundamental issues: support for Ukraine in his war against Russia, the migration (especially from Russia to the Nordic countries) and the role that Europe plays in the energy transition.

On the issue of support for Ukraine, the right could find limitations to decision-making from Hungary. Viktor Orban, also a rightist, is one of Russia’s few allies in the war and the relationship between the leaders could generate geopolitical clashes in Parliament.

Shocks of the elections

The unfavorable results of the Renaissance Party (government party) caused the announcement by the president Emmanuel Macron of the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly and the call for elections to be held between June 30 and July 7. Immediately, the markets reacted, stocks plummeted and the euro fell to one-month lows. ANDOn the other hand, the winner of the day was Giorgia Meloni, Italian Prime Minister, a leader with interests aligned with those of the EPP.
