Teacher was fired for showing the film “The Butterfly Effect” to students in Argentina

A teacher from an Argentine primary school was fired after showing her the film “The butterfly Effect” to children in 4th and 5th grade, that is, between 9 and 10 years old.

According to a document from the Judicial Branch of the Trans-Andean Nation, the teacher was supposed to take a Physical Education class, however, due to bad weather, she decided to show a film.

All about Argentina

The controversy arises because “The Butterfly Effect” is a film that is rated for people over 18 years of age because it has content warnings, such as “violence, alcohol consumption, tobacco consumption, foul language, sexual content.”

She was fired for “lack of pedagogical criteria”

The parents and guardians of the students who saw the film requested a meeting with the establishment authorities to complain about the content of the production that they showed to the 9 and 10 year old children.

Subsequently, the school decided to dismiss the teacher for “lack of pedagogical criteria for showing a film that was not suitable for 4th and 5th grade students”.

Likewise, it was established that the film in question was not part of the film catalog available in the school library, but was brought by an adult, so the teacher had to oppose its reproduction, since it is not recommended for children of that age.

The teacher found that his dismissal was unjustified, since she did not choose the film, so she went to court. Even, according to witnesses, “the DVD containing the film was taken from the backpack” of another teacher of the same subject.

Finally, the National Chamber of Labor Appeals of Argentina dismissed the appeal filed by the dismissed teacher, reported Diario Constitucional.

The justification determined that the teacher “does not question that said material was not suitable for minors” and that when she learned that “The Butterfly Effect” was going to be screened she did nothing to prevent it “which is why it must be understood that she participated – at least with their consent or omissive conduct—in the decision to show said film to children.
