Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the launch of A new program to support foreign caregivers and grant them permanent residence if they meet certain requirements. The Immigration Levels Plan 2024-2026 aims to admit more than 15,000 caregivers as Canadian citizens over the next two years. According to the official statement, “foreign caregivers are invaluable to Canadian families,” and the new programs “will provide home care workers with permanent residence upon arrival in Canada.” These programs replace the “Home Child Care Provider Pilot Program” and the “Home Support Worker Pilot Program.” In June 2014, the Live-in Caregiver Program accounted for to 60,000 workers, of which today less than one percent remains. As of April 30, 2024, nearly 5,700 caregivers and their families have achieved permanent resident status since the launch of the previous programs in 2019.
