Ups and downs on the French right for legislative elections

The large victory in the European elections on Sunday of the National Rally (RN), identified with the extreme right, and the reaction of President Emmanuel Macron to dissolve the National Assembly and call elections, caused an earthquake that at the moment has a particular impact on the right.

The objective is clear from the fields that are outlined: to achieve an absolute majority in the Assembly (289 of the 577 deputies) in the new legislative elections with a view to claiming the right to govern, and for this, coalitions or blocks are essential, something as well as walking on quicksand.

Motivated by their victory, the leader of RN, Marine Le Pen, and its president and head of the list in the European elections, Jordan Bardella, are seeking support that will allow them to govern in France, for which they declared themselves prepared and bearers of “a hope.” , amid the concern of other sectors of society that reject the proposals of the extreme right.

Yesterday an agreement was revealed between RN, which obtained 31.4 percent of the votes in the European elections, and the other far-right party, Reconquista, which obtained 5.5, forces far from each other, despite Marine’s family connection with the head of the list of that organization, Marion Maréchal (niece).

However, Maréchal announced this Tuesday that she was informed by Bardella that there will be no pact between the nationalists, two forces described here as “anti-European” and accused of being racist for their hostility towards migrants.

This contradictory position after the numerous exchanges we had is not up to the events or the hope generated, said the future MEP from Reconquista, a party founded by the controversial Éric Zemmour.

Another tension around RN and its claims to claim power at the hands of a complicated absolute majority in the Borbón Palace is the decision of the president of the conservative party Los Republicanos (LR), Éric Ciotti, to agree with the extreme right represented by Le Pen and Bardella.

The RN leaders celebrated the alliance and offered not to present candidates for deputies in the constituencies in which the conservatives do so.

We need this alliance, Ciotti argued, a criterion that sparked an immediate break with him on the part of other LR heavyweights, a force considered the political heir of General Charles de Gaulle.

Since that announcement, calls for Ciotti’s resignation and complaints of renouncing history and acting in self-interest have abounded, under the argument that the Republican right does not have it in its DNA to agree with the extreme right.

Following his statements, I believe that he cannot preside over our movement, reacted the president of the Senate, Gérard Larcher, while the head of the LR bench in the upper house, Bruno Retailleau, accused Ciotti of lying and committing a double act. missing, “on substance and in manner.”

Even harsher was the president of the Paris Region, Valérie Pécresse, who stated that her coreligionist “sold his soul for a plate of lentils.”

LR figures such as Laurent Wauquiez and François-Xavier Bellamy also criticized the conservative-extreme right agreement, and logically from the ruling party and the left field.

The Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire, urged LR members in disagreement with Ciotti to join the ranks of the government in the battle of the legislative elections, a crucial appointment at the polls for the future of the country.

While the right is going through ups and downs associated with the political earthquake caused by the Europeans and the dissolution of the National Assembly, the left seems to be moving towards unique candidacies, although not free of differences and contradictions.

Last night the socialists, the rebels, the environmentalists and the communists called to form a Popular Front that represents an alternative to the policies of Macron and the extreme right.

For his part, the head of state assures that his bet in calling new legislative elections is to win, and he ruled out that an adverse result would lead to his resignation.

Complex days are coming on French soil, with the registration of candidacies beginning tomorrow, until Sunday, and the start of the electoral campaign on Monday.
