The text of the law establishes that “anyone who offends the memory of a dead person with insulting or defamatory expressions will be punished with a fine of ten to fifty days. The right to prosecute for this crime includes the spouse, children, parents, grandchildren and blood siblings of the deceased.”

The deceased was from Matagalpa, Nicaragua, but had lived in Costa Rica for decades and was naturalized.

Who was Otoniel Orozco, the murdered man?

On the morning of Monday, June 3, Otoniel Orozco Mendoza, 53, was shot to death in the Río Palma condominiums, in Guachipelín de Escazú, Costa Rica.

Orozco, a private security businessman, was a Nicaraguan nationalized Costa Rican, father of five children, including a youngest who was one year old and the oldest who was 19. He had been married for 20 years and lived in Escazú after residing in La Peregrina de La Uruca.
