G7 agrees to support Ukraine for 50 billion dollars – DW – 06/12/2024

The leaders of the G7 countries (Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom) reached an agreement this Wednesday (06/12/2024) for “the disbursement of 50 billion” dollars for Ukraine through the use of Russian assets frozen “before the end of 2024”, the French presidency announced.

“There is an agreement. As always in the G7, the leaders make a decision and the technicians then do their job to shape it” and ensure that it is “in accordance with the law” and conforms “to the public financial rules” and the ” financial capabilities of each other,” explained the same source about the financial injection that kyiv will receive.

The idea of granting Ukraine up to $50 billion in loans guaranteed by the interest on the €300 billion in Russian central bank assets frozen by the European Union and the G7 powers to help Ukraine did not generate consensus until now among the group of seven industrialized powers.

40 billion at least

“It was an American initiative initially,” the Elysee Palace stressed. “This loan is intended to be repaid with the proceeds of frozen Russian assets,” explained the French presidency. “But if for one reason or another, Russian assets were to be unfrozen or if Russian asset income were to fail to produce enough to finance the loan, the question of burden sharing would arise,” he added.

The announcement comes on the same day that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg urged the countries of the Alliance to maintain annual military support for Ukraine of at least 40 billion euros, a figure that he estimates has been provided every year. year to kyiv since the Russian aggression began in February 2022.
