A cruise ship that would house more than 2,000 police officers who would provide security at the summit of leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) It was confiscated after complaints about poor conditions on board.

The officers were to be housed in the Mykonos Magicrenamed Goddess of the Nightdocked in the city of BrindisiItaly, about 60 kilometers from Borgo Egnaziaa luxury resort in the southern region of Puglia which hosts the G7 meeting from June 13 to 15.

Earlier this week, unions bemoaned poor sanitary conditions on board, saying many cabins were unusable, with water leaks, unusable bathrooms and broken air conditioning, forcing those on board to be moved to hotels and another ship.

Initial investigations revealed “significant hygienic-sanitary insufficiencies and serious accommodation deficiencies,” which could constitute a crime of fraud in public supplies, according to a police statement.

Police said the ship had been seized following an order by Brindisi prosecutors to allow further investigations. In an earlier statement, police also said they were considering legal action against the ship’s owner.

Italian media reported that the government had paid around 6 million euros ($6.46 million) to rent it for the duration of the G7.
