More than a hundred marches and events are planned throughout the country in view of the declared objective of the party led by Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella to come to power through an absolute majority in the National Assembly, which it aspires to in the legislative elections of 30 June and July 7 (second round).

For the first time on French soil, the rise of the extreme right is assumed as a real possibility, after RN triumphed by a wide margin in the European elections last Sunday, with 31.4 percent of the votes, more than double the achieved by the ruling Renaissance party and its allies (14.6).

Looking ahead to the legislative elections, polls place the extreme right with an advantage over the alliance of left-wing forces, the Popular Front, and the ruling party, with no guarantee that any camp will achieve the support of an absolute majority in the lower house, at least 289. of the 577 deputies, to claim the position of prime minister.

The country’s main unions, including the French Democratic Confederation of Labor (CFDT) and the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), were the first to call their members to the streets this weekend.

Our Republic and our democracy are in danger, France must respond to the social and environmental urgency and the aspirations of its workers, they said in a statement.

Likewise, they considered that President Emmanuel Macron assumed a great responsibility by dissolving the National Assembly and calling for legislative elections in a context marked by the proximity of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which will begin on July 26, and the vacation period.

The newly formed Popular Front, made up of the Socialist, Communist, La Francia Insumisa and Europa Ecology Los Verdes parties, supports the demonstrations.

In its platform with an eye on the legislative elections, the bloc set priorities as representing a power alternative to the current government and stopping the advance of the extreme right.
