Cuban President mourns death of diplomat Giraldo Mazola

Havana, June 14 (ACN) Miguel Díaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, today regretted the death of the diplomat Giraldo Mazola Collazo, at 86 years of age.

My condolences to family, companions and friends of the unforgettable Giraldo Mazola, whose personal history as a clandestine combatant, founding president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) and diplomat of the Cuban Revolution places him in his own right at the forefront of our history , declared the president in X.

Mazola joined the fight against Batista’s tyranny at the age of 16, when he was studying medicine and joined the July 26 action groups in Havana.

After the triumph of the Revolution, at the age of 23, he became founding President of ICAP in 1960. This responsibility allowed him to work closely with Fidel and Che in the creation and implementation of a structure designed to avoid the isolation of revolutionary Cuba.

From 1969 to 1974, he was executive secretary of the Provincial Committee of the PCC in Camagüey; In 1974 he joined MINREX, holding the positions of Director of North Africa and the Middle East from 1978 to 1989; vice minister from 1980 to 1993 and head of the Population Assistance Office until 2023.

He served as ambassador to Algeria, Mauritania, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Chile and Namibia and carried out numerous official missions in other countries.

At the time of his death, he worked at the Document Management Center, from where he continued his work to rescue the historical memory of the Chancellery.
