Emmanuel Macron stressed this Saturday that to achieve lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia, international legality must be respected and that It requires as a precondition to help kyiv resist aggression and recover sovereignty.

In his speech at the summit organized in Switzerland at the initiative of the Ukrainian Government, the President of France stated that “this peace cannot be based on capitulation and that is why the precondition is to help Ukraine to resist.”

“What is at stake are our international rules and the possibility of establishing peace everywhere”said the French head of state, who criticized the fact that Russia is blowing up that international legality.

He explained that, with the invasion of Ukraine, Russia behaves like an “imperialist regime” and that must be responded to by reinforcing the principles of the UN Charter so that borders and sovereignty are respected.

He also reproached him for his attitude as a “revisionist power” and said that it is necessary to prevent a country from attempting to revise history by invoking the world that existed in the 18th or 19th century.

For Macron, “one of the key priorities now is security around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant,” the largest in Europe, which is in the hands of Russian forces in an area of the front with Ukrainian troops.

Finally, the French president pointed out that the Olympic truce that he has requested “is not an obligation for Ukraine.” but “an appeal to Russia” to end the “war of aggression”to attacks against civilians and against infrastructure.

Leaders from dozens of countries met this Saturday in Swiss for a first peace summit in Ukraine without the participation of Russia, whose president, Vladimir Putinpreviously demanded the surrender of Kyiv before any negotiation.

The two-day meeting at the luxurious Burgenstock hotel complex will bring together the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, with more than 50 other heads of state and government.

The objective, according to the host country, is to pave the way towards a road map to peace which, later, also involves Russia. Putin, however, called the summit “trick to divert attention”.

In a televised speech, the Kremlin leader said he will order a Stop the fire and will begin negotiations “as soon as” kyiv begins the troop withdrawal of the disputed areas of eastern and southern Ukraine and refuse to enter the NATO.

Zelensky rejected Putin’s “ultimatum” and said it reminded him of Adolf Hitler’s style. NATO and the United States also repudiated Moscow’s conditions to end the war that began with the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

What can we say about this ultimatum? It is no different from others I have given before“, dismissed a Zelensky, for whom Putin’s territorial aspirations are nothing more than a “historical slander” and warns that this “new wave of russian nazism” will spread everywhere if it is not stopped.

“It is about the rebirth of Nazism. It is a new wave of this Russian Nazism. Everything that Putin says, about giving them part of our territories that they have occupied and even not, (…) that he will stop and that the conflict will not freeze, are the same messages that Hitler used.”noted the Ukrainian president.
