The ministry activated the yellow alert nationwide and specified that the measure applies to Alta Verapaz, Baja Verapaz, Chiquimula, Escuintla, Jutiapa, Petén, Quetzaltenango, Retalhuleu, San Marcos, Santa Rosa, Sololá and Suchitepéquez.

Based on information from the Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh), it included educational establishments from all sectors (public, private, cooperative and municipal), both school and extracurricular.

In addition, in order to comply with the 180 effective days of classes to guarantee continuity, teachers will use the available means to assign learning activities to their students, being able to rely on the organization’s digital sites, he added.

The Departmental Directorates of Education must maintain risk monitoring in their localities to facilitate decision-making in the face of the climate situation, he emphasized in the text.

He called on the educational community not to be fooled by unreliable information circulating on different digital platforms.

He urged people to stay aware of new measures through the Ministry’s official channels on social networks and the media.

He assured that he will inform in a timely manner about new provisions, based on the indications of the corresponding technical institutions.

The rainy season began specifically at the beginning of this month and the soils are already saturated, while several incidents and significant damage to infrastructure and homes have been recorded.

The heavy rainfall also caused deaths from lahars in the volcanoes located in the southeast of the country and the evacuation of hundreds of people from their homes due to the risk they pose.
