The head of American diplomacy, Antony Blinken, stated this Tuesday (06/18/2024) that China’s support for the Russian war effort in Ukraine “has to stop”, a slogan issued in a joint press conference with the Secretary General of NATO, the Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg.
China’s aid allows “Russia to keep that defense industrial base going, keep the war machine going, keep the war going, so that has to stop,” he said.
Stoltenberg, for his part, called for China to assume the “consequences” if it continues to support Russia.
“China cannot have it both ways. They cannot continue to have normal trade relations with countries in Europe and at the same time fuel the biggest war we have seen in Europe since World War II,” Stoltenberg said.
For its part, China claims to be neutral in the war in Ukraine and denies sending lethal aid to either side, unlike the United States and other Western countries that provided key military support to kyiv after the Russian invasion.
The strategic partnership between China and Russia has grown closer since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
